Scrolls of a Sports Scribe, Volumes I & II

$50.00

Release date: 2025

This a two-volume, 740-page collection of stories written by Kerry Eggers through 50 years of sportswriting in Portland — 45 of them with the Oregon Journal, Oregonian and Portland Tribune newspapers. There are 120 articles divided into a two-volume set featuring a wide array of sports and subject matter from 1974 to the present.

Ahead of and behind each reprinted article is a preface and postscript, setting up the story and explaining what happened with the subject after it was published.

There is no “A” and “B” volume, incidentally. Stories of import and interest are equally divided between volumes — at least that is the intent of the author.

You will see stories on legendary figures such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Muhammad Ali, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Walton, Karl Malone, Carl Lewis, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Charles Barkley, Jerry West, John McEnroe, Michael Jordan, Phil Knight, Tiger Woods, Clyde Drexler, Bob Costas, Steve Kerr, Hank Aaron, Shaquille O’Neal, Carmelo Anthony, Mondo Duplantis, Mike Tyson and Henry Rono. On characters or controversial subjects such as Dennis Rodman, Tonya Harding, Rasheed Wallace, Roddy Piper, Vince McMahon, a pit bull fight and former Portland State receiver Randy Woodfield, later known as the “I-5 Killer.” On local favorites such as Terry Baker, Bill Schonely, Pat Casey, Mitch Canham, Dick Fosbury, Jerome Kersey, Sidney Wicks, Adley Rutschman, Sabrina Ionescu, Mikayla Pivec, Jade Carey, Steven Kwan, Travis Bazzana, Chip Kelly, Damon Stoudamire, Danny Ainge, Tinker Hatfield, Clive Charles, Jim Barnett and Brent Barry. On the sad stories of Fred Quillan, Stu Gaussoin, Perry Hines and Ned Hastings.

Also: Columns from three Super Bowls, two NBA Finals, Oregon State’s first College World Series title, the “Subway” World Series and the first-ever game at San Francisco’s Pac-Bell (now Oracle) Park. And a participatory piece from a week in 1978 when Eggers played George Plimpton, participating in spring football drills with Mouse Davis’ Portland State Vikings.

It’s all there, plus much more, in one grand collection. A good autumn read or a great holiday gift for a friend or loved one!
